When I moved to Shoreditch I had nothing but a mattress. The flat looked more squat than home, but we dragged in whatever we could find. No student can afford Mayfair prices, so we hunted retro. One mate found a sofa in Hackney. It felt like Shoreditch, but that’s what made it real. Old accent chairs carry memory, and students get that instinctively. I’ve watched half my flat pass out across two chairs, and every time it felt right.

East London is built on mix and mess, and students rely on it. One afternoon I stumbled into Smithers, and the sofas looked like they belonged in films. money was tight, but it’s survived three house parties and a flood. We’ve all begged friends for lifts. it’s where life happens. Vintage pieces survive it. Mass production doesn’t care, but retro lasts. every dent becomes part of the flat. By the end of the year, the stress disappears, but the mismatched set still makes you laugh.

When you think family-friendly furniture, ignore the fake polish. Make space for a classic seat, and let it shout Shoreditch every time you sit.
