Terminology used in the world of Mario Kart time trials competition. This page covers the terminology in all Mario Kart games, Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Super Circuit, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, and Mario Kart DS.

General Terms

1lap
Variation of flap.
3lap
Amount of time it takes to complete the entire race on most races, except for SMK tracks, MKSC extra tracks, Wario Colosseum and Baby Park.
5lap
Amount of time it takes to complete the entire race on SMK tracks, MKSC Extra tracks, and the MKDS Baby Park remake.
AF
Abbreviation of Average Finish.
Average Finish
The average rank of all a player's times in a game.
Avg Fin
abbreviation of Average Finish.
Course
Variation of 2lap/3lap/5lap/7lap.
flap/Fastlap
Amount of time it takes to complete a single lap.

GP/Grand Prix

Kartlength

Getting a speed boost after power sliding. Can be done facing the right-hand side (R-MT or Right Facing MT) and to the left-hand side. (L-MT or Left Facing MT)
Non-SC/Non-shortcut
Not using shortcuts.
NPR/New personal record (not commonly used).
NTSC
The system used in the Americas and Japan that runs at 60Hz.
NTSCer
One who plays on an NTSC system.
NWR
New world record (not commonly used).
PAL
The system used in Europe, Asia (except for Japan), and Australia that runs at 50Hz. In MK64, PAL times are divided by 1.2024 to determine the equivalent NTSC time.
PALie
One who plays on a PAL system.
PL
Player's List.
POM/Player of the Month
An award given to the fastest improver of the month.
POQ/Player of the Quarter
An award given to the fastest improver of the quarter.
POS/Player of the Season
An award given to the fastest improver of the season.
POW/Player of the Week
An award given to the fastest improver of the week.
[[POY]/Player of the Year
An award given to the fastest improver of the year.
PR/Personal Record
A person's fastest course or lap for a certain track.
PRB
Prolonged rocket boost: A glitch used to drive offroad without speed loss.
SC/Shortcut
Jumping over a wall or fence or using lakitu to skip part of the track. Routes that were clearly intended, for example the tunnel in Koopa Troopa Beach or jumping over unobstructed gaps is not a shortcut.
Shroom/Mushroom
Speed boost items you can use during the race. You get none in SMK, 3 in MK64 and MKSC, 2 in MKDD, and 1, 2, or 3 depending on your kart choice in MKDS.
Shroomslide
Sliding while shrooming.
Snaking
Variation of SSMT.
SR
Site Record: The fastest 3lap or flap that has been submitted to a certain site.
SSMT
Straight stretch mini-turbo: Doing a mini-turbo on a straightaway.
Standard
A set time needed to achieve a certain rank.

Strategy.
TT
Time Trials
WR/World Record
The fastest course or lap driven by anyone for a certain track.
Vs./Versus Mode
A mode where multiple players can play against each other.
Zipper
A yellow and red strip (usually pointing in an arrow shape) which gives you a boost as powerful as a shroom (see shroom).

Super Mario Kart

NBT/New Boosting Technique
Using a boost to drive offroad without speed loss.
Non-NBT
Not using NBTs.

Mario Kart 64

AB-spin
Pressing A+B+left or right while standing still to quickly spin around.
Dexghost
A ghost saved on your computer by using a dexdrive.
Everettstart (MK64)
A trick used to save 0.01 at the beginning of a race.
Mylestyle
A shortcut in Luigi Raceway.
POS
Player of the Season: An award given to the fastest improver of the season.
Spinies
Term used to describe the black shaped things on Yoshi Valley.
Spiral
The fully circular turn with the star in the middle in Rainbow Road.
Tran
Sticking to the road as you go down the steep slope in Rainbow Road. Also sometimes used with slopes in other races.

Mario Kart Super Circuit

Blue Boost
Boost gained by holding a slide long enough that when you straighten up you gain a visible boost.
Tricking or Ticking
A method of shrooming into a stationary part of the track (wall/block etc) and then letting go of the gas, you will continue at full speed and can cross terrains without losing speed.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

2lap
Amount of time it takes to complete the entire race in Wario Colosseum.
7lap
Amount of time it takes to complete the entire race in Baby Park.
50Hz
Only available on a PAL system, and runs at a frame rate of 25fps, so the game runs slower than in 60Hz.
60Hz
Available on both NTSC and PAL systems, and runs at a frame rate of 29.97fps, the speed the game was meant to be played at.
Straight MT
An MT where you release the gas button just after the turbo is released. This will cause you to continue drifting in the direction that you were sliding, allowing for perfectly straight MTs.
